PKM Weekly – 2024-05-04

Hi Everyone,

Another week packed with updates and news from various PKM apps out there. From mobile app news to new releases and future portability, let’s get to it.

The developments from this week come from:

TANA

  • @Aaebraham01 and @AaronLawsonOG did a Tana Expert Tips talk where they covered things like what Tana is, some key features and workflows, amongst other topics. I really enjoyed the episode and hope you will too. Cannot wait for the next one.

  • Carrying on a similar path, @PennyOlo discusses her journey with Tana while demonstrating the pros and cons of the software at the Lodge
  • I would really like to see some sort of roadmap of Tana and what the devs are working on. Yes, there is ideas.tana, but this is not the same thing as a roadmap. I want to understand the direction Tana is going in, what things are likely to come / being worked on and where it is going.

  • Came across a recent post on “Moving to Evernote because…Unlike Notion, Obsidian, Tana, Anytype and other note / PKM tools, I don’t have to build the system. I write, it’s searchable and everything is nicely put in notebooks and stacks. Tasks are integrated, and it looks like two-way sync is coming to calendars soon.”. Have PKM apps become so overwhelming that users are returning to more simplistic note-taking apps?

OBSIDIAN

  • Updates for Obsidian have been quiet of late, with the devs working on RTL support and improving the mobile start-up experience. I hope these will be completed soon so that we can move on to interesting stuff like dynamic views and PDF annotating.
  • Transform Your Dataview Queries into Editable Tables! Dataedit is an Obsidian plugin that turns your static Dataview queries into dynamic, editable tables. Start tweaking data right where you see it!

LOGSEQ

  • After a significant period of silence, I am pleased to say that the Logseq team provided a useful update on why they were developing a DB version and its status. In short:
    • Why – to enable real-time collaboration, data integrity and more features.
    • When – Expect to start pre-alpha testing with the database version in 2 ~ 3 months
    • Cost – Free
    • Status:
  • A full copy of the post by Tienson can be found here.

  • With the above announcement, the team also updated the status of Real Time Collaboration (RTC) and what is required to complete this:

  • My friend Bass has packaged and explained the above update very nicely. Check out his video for more details.

  • This is for those who read to this point. If you want an easy way to test the upcoming DB version without having to install anything or pull your hair out when something fails, then try this. Open the DB Version Pull Request and scroll down to the bottom of the page until the last “View deployment” button is visible. Click that, and you will be redirected to a web version of the most recent commit on this feature. Voila! BUT please do not actually use this version if you do not want to lose anything. Consider this a sneak peek and wait for the proper version to be released.

REMNOTE

  • RemNote just got even faster! Our local-first graph database runs completely offline in your browser, desktop, and mobile. Supports millions of nodes. The sidebar, all notes pages, FH, and documents now load significantly faster due to internal optimizations with how we’re compactly storing data. Link

  • You can now create arbitrary queries for spaced repetition metadata! Last practice time, scheduled time, interval, mastery status, etc. Queries can be composed with arbitrary and/or/not expressions.

  • You can now separately report your score for each item on list cards! Each bullet is tracked as its own spaced repetition item. If you forgot some list items, you’ll be tested on those specific items next time.

That’s all for this week. Thank you very much in advance for reading and I look forward to bringing you more PKM news next week.
