PKM Weekly – 2024-05-11

Hi Everyone,

For those lucky enough to live in a place where you could see the Northern Lights / Aurora Borealis from your doorstep, I hope you enjoyed it! I am not in that camp, so had to make due with a light polluted sky.

With that unexpected even out of the way, and before we have (what is being billed as major) news from OpenAI, let’s see what the developments were in the PKM world.

The developments from this week come from:

CAPACITIES

  • Capacities announced that the Public API was in Beta for Capacities Pro and Believer users. The API should open up a whole new world for using Capacities as it allows you to interact with Capacities programmatically, enabling you to build custom integrations, automate workflows, and more.

  • A public API also means community integrations can be built, and we have two already!
    • WebHighlights a popular Chrome extension for highlighting websites and pdfs. You can copy a markdown version of your highlights to Capacities to integrate with your knowledge work.
    • Second Brain for Youtube which helps you get AI-generated summaries from Youtube videos to add to your Capacities space as weblinks.
    • All of this on top of our existing integrations, with Todoist, Ticktick, Things, WhatsApp, Hookmark and more!

  • In addition, Capacities also introduces the official Raycastapp x Capacities extension. Raycast is a highly extensible launcher that will superpower your Mac. With the integration you can:
    • add to your daily note without needing to open Capacities
    • save a weblink to any Capacities space
    • open any Capacities Space
    • search the titles of all of your Capacities content

TANA

  • The Tana team are looking for some quick testers for something new! If you are interested and can help for ~15 mins over the weekend? Please add your details here

  • The Tana app has been updated and now includes,
    • Side menu and tabs views unified: Side menu views and tabs now share a similar design. It makes using both views together
    • We added an “append to field” option to the “set field” command. This means you can choose whether to overwrite or append to when using set field!
    • Bug Fixes

  • This is not quite solely related to Tana, but as Fis Fraga is a big user of Tana this is where it will go. Fis and a few fellow authors published a paper on “Creating Automatic Connections for Personal Knowledge Management”The field of Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. Interestingly, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models are also becoming mainstream, but PKM has not seen much integration with NLP. With this motivation, this article first introduces a methodology to automatically interconnect isolated text collections using NLP techniques combined with Knowledge Graphs. The text connections are generated by exploring the semantic relatedness of the texts and the concepts they share. The article proceeds to describe PKM Assistants that incorporate the methodology to assist users in understanding and exploring the knowledge contained in text collections using a Knowledge Management tool called Tana. The article continues with an assessment of the methodology using a text collection composed of several books and book passages collected for each book. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of the proposed methodology, with special attention to the potential use cases.
